Right to Seek Asylum: Muhire’s Story
Muhire is a journalist whose reporting forced him to flee across several borders. After leaving his native country due to pressure over his reporting, he settled in Egypt and continued using his social media platforms to highlight injustices, including the unequal treatment of refugees and non-citizens living there. His work quickly drew the attention of authorities, leading to harassment, imprisonment, and continued threats that made it impossible for him to remain. With no protection and no guarantee of survival, Moses fled once again, this time seeking refuge in Rwanda.
Once in Rwanda, Muhire knew that rebuilding his life would require legal protection. As a foreign journalist who had already faced persecution, applying for asylum was essential for his safety and stability. While searching online for guidance, he found the Legal Aid Forum’s website and learned that LAF offers free legal assistance to human rights defenders and asylum seekers. He reached out immediately.
LAF assigned a lawyer who guided him through the asylum process, prepared his documentation, and represented him before the authorities. Through this support, Muhire was granted a temporary residence permit and was able to continue his work.
Muhire’s story shows how legal protection can keep a vital voice alive. When human rights defenders receive timely assistance, their work continues and the injustices they expose cannot be silenced.
